Energy-Saving Tips from the Experts

  • Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall, energy dollars are sucked out of homes through drafty doors, windows, non-insulated attics, walls, floors, and basements. There are a number of simple things you can do around the house to save money on energy costs all year round.
  • Change or clean heating and a/c filters monthly. Dirty filters put unnecessary strain on the unit and can increase operating costs.
  • Know your numbers In summer, set your A/C at 80º. Turn it up to 85º or higher when you're out of the house and you could save 6 to 8% for each degree you raise the setting. In the winter, set your thermostat at 68 degrees. When you go out, set it back about 8 degrees. It could save you 8% in heating costs.
  • Ceiling fans can help you stay comfortable year round. In summer, you could raise your thermostat several degrees and still feel comfortably cool. In winter, reversible fans can move warm air down and reduce your heating bill!
  • Ventilate your attic and install an attic fan - it can cool your attic by nearly 30º in summer! In winter, seal off your attic circulating fan with polyethylene and tape.
  • To keep heat out in summer, close those curtains, shades and blinds. Put solar screens on east and west windows. Sunny windows can account for 10% to 25% of your cooling bill by making your air conditioner work two to three times harder. During winter months, open your shades and let the warm sunshine in.
  • Cover or remove window a/c units in winter.
  • Seal all air leaks, even in the basement and attic. Caulk and weatherstrip around doors, windows, hatches, chimneys and electrical outlets. Make sure your fireplace damper and glass fireplace doors are closed when the fireplace is not in use. Undetected leaks can lead to higher energy bills in the winter and summer!
  • Keep your doors, cabinets, and closets closed when not in use - all year long. This can help keep the temperature comfortable where you want it, while minimizing the heat/cool air loss in these areas. Consider closing the heating/cooling vents in rooms that you do not use, as long as you keep the door closed!
  • Make sure your home has adequate insulation in the attic, walls, floors and basements or crawl spaces. Insulate furnace ducts or boiler pipes in unheated areas.
  • Put clear plastic over the inside or outside of your windows during the heating season to reduce heat loss and increase comfort. Remove in summer.
  • Don't place lamps or TV sets near your air conditioner thermostat. The thermostat senses heat from these appliances and causes the air conditioning to run longer than necessary, using more energy. In winter, keep baseboards and radiators clear of rugs and furniture.
  • Run your washing machine and dishwasher only when there's a full load. Always clean the dryer lint filter after every load. Dryer filters full of lint will cause your dryer to work harder and longer, using more energy.
  • Use the cold or warm setting on your clothes washer instead of hot for significant savings. While you're at it, lower the temperature of your water heater from 140º (medium) to 120º (low). You'll save 3-5% in water heating costs for each 10º reduction.
  • Replace incandescent lights with fluorescent. They last up to 13 times longer and use 75% less energy than standard light bulbs.
  • Insulate your water heater to save energy and money.
  • Install water-conserving fixtures, such as showerheads, faucets and toilets.
