Can you imagine your central air conditioning unit going on the fritz in the middle of a July heat wave?
If you’re getting sweaty just thinking about it, you may want to consider upgrading to a newer cooling system.
Did you know you can save yourself time, money and frustration when you upgrade to a newer unit? But how do you know if you need to upgrade? Here are four things to think about:
- Are you spending more money on repairs than you would for a new unit? If you regularly call your HVAC company to send someone to fix your unit, you may save yourself money in the long run by buying a new one. Compare your repair bills against what it’ll cost you to install a new unit with a warranty. If you’re spending 50% or more money on repairs compared to what a new unit would cost you, you’re losing money.
- Another telltale sign: If your central air unit is over 10 years old, a newer one will save you more money because it’s designed to save more energy than the older units. Today’s systems use technology to give you greater control over your indoor temperatures and humidity levels to keep you comfortable as well as control how much energy you use throughout the day.
- The benefits of a warranty: If your unit has outlived its warranty, then it’s time to invest in a new unit that’s under warranty. Without a warranty, you’re paying all your central air bills out of pocket. Not only will a new unit not need repairs for a long time, but you’ll save money when you have a warranty covering all kinds of mishaps.
- Other signs it’s time to replace: If you have rooms in your home that are too hot or too cold—and you can’t seem to control those extremes; your home has humidity problems—including mold forming due to too much humidity; or your cooling system is noisy, then it’s time to shop around for a new air conditioning unit.
